Portable generator pre-winterizing checklist

To ensure your portable generator runs smoothly during the colder months, it’s critical to prepare it for the winter. This comprehensive checklist will guide you through the necessary steps to maintain your generator’s reliability and performance.

Visual inspection

• Check for damage and wear: Inspect the exterior for any visible signs of damage or wear. Look for cracks, dents, or broken parts that could affect performance.
• Check for leaks: Inspect the generator for oil, fuel, or coolant leaks. Address any leaks immediately to prevent further damage.
• Check connections: Thoroughly inspect all bolts, nuts, and screws, and check wiring and terminals for corrosion or loose connections. Make sure all components are securely connected and in good condition.

Remove dirt and debris

To reduce the risk of rust, use a soft brush or cloth to remove any accumulated dirt, dust, or debris from the surface of the generator before storing it. Be careful not to get engine parts or the electrical panel wet.

Clean the air filter

A portable generator’s air filter keeps debris from entering the engine, where it can build up and cause damage over time. The air filter is essential for efficient operation and performance. Remove and clean the air filter to ensure optimal airflow. Replace it if worn or damaged.

Inspect and clean exhaust area

It is common for the exhaust and vents to become clogged with ice and snow during the winter. Heavy snow can cover these areas, and when the snow freezes, the passages become blocked. Make sure there are no obstructions in the exhaust area. Remove any buildup that could restrict airflow.

Spark plug inspection/replacement

Remove carburetor

In addition to draining the tank, you must also drain the carburetor to avoid the risk of corrosion. Place a container under the carburetor to collect the fuel. Then loosen the carburetor drain bolt and let the fuel drain into the container. This fuel can evaporate and leave harmful deposits.

Fuel management

If you plan to store your portable generator for less than 30 days, add fuel stabilizer to the gasoline. Fuel stabilizer prevents fuel from going bad and causing carburetors to clog. Add the recommended amount of fuel stabilizer to a nearly full tank of gas. Run the generator for a few minutes to ensure the stabilizer circulates throughout the fuel system.

If you plan to store your portable generator for more than 30 days, you will need to drain all gasoline from the portable generator’s fuel tank. This method is especially useful to prevent problems caused by stale fuel.

Changing the oil

Like cars, portable generators also require regular oil changes to ensure they are free of debris and function properly. For wintry weather, use winter-grade oils, which remain fluid at low temperatures, ensuring proper lubrication during startup and operation. A well-oiled portable generator will run more efficiently and will be less likely to overheat.

Checking and charging the battery

If you store your generator, disconnect the battery, and place it in a warmer environment or use a trickle charger to maintain its charge. Before you use the portable generator again, check the battery for signs of corrosion.

It is recommended to check the battery voltage regularly. If the battery is still low, replace the battery before the wintry weather begins.

Storing the portable generator

If possible, place it on a pallet or other foundation and wrap it securely with a tarp. This will prevent water from melting snow from running out.

Remember to run it regularly

To ensure your portable generator stays in good working order, plan to run it for about half an hour every three months. If you don’t run the engine regularly, parts will begin to lose the protection of their oil covering, hoses and rubber seals may begin to crack, and other problems may occur.
